Following the loss of his younger sibling, a depressed 19-year-old Los Angeles street dancer is able to avoid juvenile hall by enrolling at Atlanta’s historically black Truth University. His attempts to get an education and woo the girl he loves, though, are thwarted when he is courted by the top two campus fraternities, all of which want and require his fierce street-style dance steps to win the highly coveted national step show competition.
