In 1957, a basic love disaster starts. Guy Foucher, a 20-year-old French car mechanic, is head over heels in love with Geneviève Emery, a 17-year-old employee at her widowed mother’s posh but cash-strapped umbrella store. Guy and Geneviève make love the night before Guy leaves for a two-year war tour in Algeria. As she becomes pregnant, she must decide whether to wait for Guy’s return or consider a marriage proposal from a rich diamond merchant.
