In a mansion painted crimson, four women clad in white are haunted by voices and cries.

Agnes’ sisters are so engrossed in their own psychic pains that they are unable to provide her with the care she needs when she succumbs to cancer. Maria is filled with remorse about her husband’s attempted suicide, which was precipitated by his revelation of her extramarital affair. Karin, who is suicidal and self-loathing, seems to despise her niece. Just Anna, the intensely religious maid who has lost her small boy, seems to be able to console and empathize with Agnes.
