Overview

Father Lankester Merrin takes a sabbatical from the Church to perform prehistoric excavations in British-administered East Africa after witnessing traumatic incidents during WWII. Merrin discovers an ancient Byzantine church that was founded and then buried to prevent evil from infiltrating the crypt below. The locals believe that exposing the church has released a ghost, and they begin fighting the British military troops violently. Merrin must face down the demon that has taken hold of everyone dear to him as the village devolves into anarchy and conflict.
