Overview
The assassination of Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the year 180 destabilizes the Roman Empire. Maximus is a primary adviser to the Emperor and one of the most competent and trustworthy generals in the Roman army. Maximus is set to be assassinated when Marcus’ devious son Commodus ascends to the throne. He manages to flee, but is apprehended by slave dealers. Maximus is renamed Spaniard and compelled to fight to the death with other men for the entertainment of paying spectators.
