Charley Thompson, a teen living with his single parent, works with horse trainer Del Montgomery during the season. Charley forms a bond with an elderly racehorse called Lean on Pete, and when he learns that he is destined for slaughter, he steals the horse and sets off for an adventure through the modern American frontier with him.
