Laurent Chevalier, a 15-year-old boy in 1950s France, stumbles his way through the emerging swell of puberty in this loosely plotted coming-of-age story. Chevalier develops scarlet fever after witnessing his first intimate encounter with a prostitute and avoiding the lips of a priest. Chevalier, along with his overly caring and adulterous girlfriend, is admitted to a sanatorium after his fever causes a heart murmur.
