Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian mountaineer, travels to the Himalayas without his family to lead an expedition in 1939. When World War II breaks out, the greedy Harrer is captured as a prisoner of war by Allied troops. He makes his way to Llaso, Tibet, with a fellow prisoner, where he encounters the 14-year-old Dalai Lama, whose friendship changes his perspective on life.
