Melanie Daniels, a stylish socialite, has a fleeting flirtation with an eligible solicitor in a San Francisco pet store and, on the spur of the moment, follows him to his hometown with a gift of lovebirds. However, as she arrives, the bird community explodes. The townspeople are suddenly confronted with a huge avian onslaught, with the feathered fiends assaulting residents all over Bodega Bay for no apparent reason.
