A enigmatic client’s brusque aide hires surveillance specialist Harry Caul to follow a young couple. Caul and his associate Stan track the couple across San Francisco’s Union Square and manage to capture a mysterious exchange between them. Caul becomes fascinated with the subsequent tape, seeking to ascertain whether the pair is in danger, while he is haunted by flashbacks of a prior case that ended poorly.
