Rachel Singer is a retired Mossad operative who attempted to apprehend a suspected Nazi war murderer – the Surgeon of Birkenau – in a covert Israeli operation that resulted in his death on the streets of East Berlin. Now, 30 years later, a man pretending to be the doctor has surfaced, and Rachel is forced to travel to Eastern Europe in order to discover the facts. Overwhelmed with flashbacks of her younger self and two fellow officers, the still-famous protagonist is forced to relive the pain of those experiences and face the debt she has accumulated.
