Thomas Jerome Newton is an extraterrestrial that has arrived on Earth in need of water in order to preserve his home world. Thomas, with the support of lawyer Oliver Farnsworth, utilizes his applied technological skills to make lucrative innovations. While working on a water transportation method, Thomas meets Mary-Lou, a quiet hotel clerk, and falls in love with her. Thomas is stopped by the US government just before he is about to depart Earth, and his whole scheme is jeopardized.
