Overview
The tale of Michael Berg, a German prosecutor who had an affair with an older lady, Hanna, while he was a youth in the late 1950s, and then vanished, only to reappear years later as a witness in a war crimes trial arising from her conduct as a concentration camp guard late in the war. He is the only one who knows Hanna is illiterate and might be concealing it at the cost of her liberty.
