In Tampico, Mexico, in 1925, Fred C. Dobbs and Bob Curtin, both down on their luck, encounter a grizzled prospector called Howard and plan to follow him in his quest for gold in the wilds of central Mexico. They finally discover gold after overcoming tremendous obstacles, but pirates, the elements, and, most importantly, corruption seek to transform their good fortune into ruin.
